Do PCR tests contain the carcinogenic ethylene oxide?

Messages are being spread on social media claiming that the swabs for PCR tests contain the carcinogenic ethylene oxide. It is true that the cotton swabs are sterilized with the ethylene oxide. Other cotton swabs for medical purposes are also sterilized with ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide in gaseous form is used for this purpose. The gas evaporates completely and can no longer be found in the cotton swabs.

Ethylene oxide is only carcinogenic through occupational exposure or by inhaling air containing ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is also found in cigarette smoke. The amount of ethylene oxide in medical sterilization is strictly controlled and is so low that it cannot be said to be a harmful amount.
