Can you donate blood after a vaccination against COVID-19?
You may donate blood after a COVID-19 vaccination, but there are specific guidelines and waiting periods that must be adhered to. Here are the general guidelines.
In many countries, such as the Netherlands, there is a short waiting period after vaccination before you can donate blood. For most COVID-19 vaccines, this period is usually 7 days after each dose. This is to ensure that any side effects from the vaccination are not confused with other health problems.
You must be feeling well and not have any symptoms of COVID-19 or side effects from the vaccine at the time of the blood draw. If you have fever, pain or other side effects, it is recommended to wait until these symptoms have disappeared.
The type of vaccine you received may affect the waiting period. This mainly applies to non-common vaccines or when new information becomes available about specific vaccines.
WHO issues guidance to blood banks worldwide and emphasizes that people who receive COVID-19 vaccines that contain non-live viruses, such as mRNA vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna) do not need a waiting period
