Do carbon monoxide rebreathers improve sports performance?

Carbon monoxide (CO) rebreathers are not generally used to improve sports performance. But a number of athletes do use them for that purpose.

Carbon monoxide rebreathers allow the user to inhale more carbon monoxide than usual. This is done in certain tests. But using the device for a long time would have a beneficial effect on endurance. The effect could be compared to an altitude training period. But there is no scientific evidence of the beneficial effect.

In fact, breathing carbon monoxide is dangerous and can pose serious health risks. CO is a toxic gas that, when inhaled, binds to hemoglobin in the blood, reducing the blood's ability to carry oxygen. This can lead to several health problems, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness and even death with high exposure.

If you are looking for ways to improve your sports performance, it is advisable to speak to a sports doctor or qualified trainer who can advise you on safe and effective methods.
