How can your lifestyle reduce the risk of colon cancer?

Lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on reducing the risk of colon cancer. Here are some important steps you can take.

Aim for a healthy diet with fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. Reduce consumption of red meat and processed meat. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of high-intensity physical activity per week. Get up and move during the day, especially if you have a sedentary job.

Excess weight, especially fat around the abdomen, is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Smoking is linked to many types of cancer, including colon cancer. Quitting smoking has many health benefits and reduces the risk of cancer. Avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks and processed foods, which are often high in unhealthy fats, sugars and salt.

Get regularly screened for colon cancer, especially if you are over 50 years old. If you have a family history of the disease, it is best to discuss with your doctor a screening program that can start earlier.
