What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that uses natural plant extracts, known as essential oils, to promote health and well-being.
Essential oils are extracted from various parts of plants, such as flowers, bark, leaves, or fruits. These oils are said to have medicinal properties. They are administered by inhalation through diffusers, steam baths, or directly from the bottle. They can also be applied diluted to the skin.
Aromatherapy is said to work for muscle pain, skin problems, stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. They are also said to strengthen the immune system.
Essential oils should be used with caution, as they are concentrated and can irritate the respiratory tract and skin. They can also cause allergic reactions.
The scientific evidence for the effectiveness of aromatherapy is very poor. Some studies show positive effects, especially for reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality, but these effects are comparable to placebo.
