Does colchicine help against COVID-19?

Results from clinical trials on the use of colchicine in COVID-19 have been mixed.

A large study known as the COLCORONA study examined the use of colchicine in non-hospitalized patients with COVID-19. This study suggested that colchicine could provide modest benefit in reducing the need for hospitalization and reducing the duration of symptoms in mild to moderate cases of COVID-19.

The RECOVERY trial, one of the largest and most respected COVID-19 clinical trials, also examined colchicine in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. However, this study found no significant benefit of colchicine in reducing mortality or improving clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients.

Given these mixed results, many experts conclude that while colchicine may offer some potential benefits in certain patient groups, it is not a breakthrough treatment for COVID-19. Its use should be carefully considered within the context of clinical guidelines and in consultation with medical professionals.

Current standard treatments for COVID-19 continue to include antivirals such as remdesiv
