What is a vaginal prolapse?
Vaginal prolapse, also known as prolapse, is a condition in which one or more of the pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum) prolapse into or protrude through the vagina. This happens when the muscles and connective tissue in the pelvic floor weaken and are no longer able to hold these organs in place.
There are different types of vaginal prolapse depending on which organ is involved: cystocele (bladder prolapse), rectocele (intestinal prolapse), uterine prolapse (of the uterus).
The causes of vaginal prolapse can vary and include pregnancy and childbirth, especially vaginal deliveries, aging and menopause, strenuous exercise, chronic cough or constipation, obesity or a genetic predisposition.
Symptoms of vaginal prolapse can vary depending on the severity of the prolapse and include a feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvis or vagina, back pain, difficulty urinating or defecating, a bulging feeling in the vagina, and pain or discomfort during intercourse.
Treatment options for vaginal prolapse vary depending on the severity of symptoms and include pelvic floor exercises (such as Kegel exercises), use of a pessary (a device placed in the vagina to support the organs), hormonal therapy, and surgical procedures to reshape the prolapsed organs into place.
