Do some sunscreens contain carcinogenic benzene?
In May 2021, it was exposed by Valisure, an independent testing laboratory, which tested a number of sunscreen products and found that some of these products contained benzene. This led to major concerns and recalls from some brands.
Benzene is a known carcinogen that has been linked to several forms of cancer, such as leukemia. Exposure to high levels of benzene can pose serious health risks.
Results from studies with rats or on cell cultures in labs are often simply applied to people. But the studies with humans show no toxic effects. Very sensitive cells are often used for studies in the labs. As a result, the results cannot be applied to humans.
The report that sunscreens are carcinogenic was later contradicted by numerous European consumer and health organizations. They claim that zone creams do not contain any carcinogenic substances. The sunscreens can therefore be used completely safely. Sunbathing without sunscreen is strongly discouraged because this is the main cause of skin cancer.
