Is a saturation meter useful to detect a COVID-19 infection?
A saturation meter is a device that measures the oxygen level in the blood at the fingertip. Doctors use this, among other things, to measure the oxygen exchange in the lungs. The saturation may have decreased with a corona infection, but in most cases the saturation is normal. A normal saturation does not rule out an infection with COVID-19. If the saturation has dropped, this is an indication to send the patient to emergency.
However, it is not useful for a patient to purchase such a device. In addition, the measurements of the devices that can be purchased online or in regular stores are not always reliable. The devices sometimes show very different values during successive measurements.
