What can go wrong with the prostate?

Everyone talks about the prostate sometimes. But what does the prostate actually do and what can go wrong with it?

The prostate is located just below the bladder, next to the rectum and around the urethra. The prostate produces substances that make semen more fluid.

The prostate can become inflamed. The men will then complain of fever, increased urge and burning sensation when urinating and pain between the anus and the scrotum.

From middle age onwards, the prostate enlarges in all men. In some people, the prostate will become so large that the urethra, which runs straight through the prostate, becomes closed. These men have difficulty urinating, they will have to urinate more often and they will have to get up more often during the night to urinate. The strength of their urine stream will also decrease. This is a benign enlargement of the prostate.

Finally, some men get prostate cancer. Older men in particular get prostate cancer. This cancer usually progresses very slowly and causes few symptoms.
