Vitamin D
Doctors are paying more and more attention to vitamin D. What does vitamin D do and what can you do if you don't have enough vitamin D?
Vitamin D ensures the absorption of calcium from the intestine. But it also ensures that not too much calcium is lost through the kidneys and that the calcium is well preserved in the bones.
A vitamin D deficiency leads to osteoporosis. Recently, a deficiency has also been linked to cardiovascular disease and cancer, although this is already under discussion.
Sunlight ensures that your vitamin D levels remain at the correct level. Sunlight will only produce vitamin D if the sun is higher than 45 degrees above the horizon. So if you never go outside or always wear long sleeves and pants, you may develop a vitamin D deficiency. You also don't produce vitamin D if you always use sunscreen.
You can increase your vitamin D levels by consuming more oily fish and butter. Many margarines also contain vitamin D.
If this is insufficient, your doctor can determine your vitamin D level and prescribe it if necessary.
