Hemorrhoids

More than half of people suffer from hemorrhoids at some point. Doctors also call them hemorrhoids. But what exactly are hemorrhoids and what can you do about them?

Hemorrhoids involve swelling of the tissue and blood vessels of the anus and/or rectum. Sometimes the hemorrhoids can become so large that they extend beyond the anus. They can become infected or bleed, causing bright red blood to appear on the toilet paper. They often cause itching or a burning sensation.

The itching may increase if you consume spicy foods. Hemorrhoids can be prevented by not using the seat heater in the car and by ensuring that bowel movements are not too hard, for example by eating enough fruit, exercising a lot and drinking enough.

There are ointments that can tackle the irritation. But you can also cool the hemorrhoids in a controlled manner, causing the blood vessels to shrink temporarily. For severe hemorrhoids, surgical intervention may be necessary.
