Is there too much salt in our diet?
For many people it is not clear how much salt they can use. We tell you what you should pay attention to.
Normally salt intake should be limited to 5 grams per day. We often use more salt. If we regularly consume too much salt, this can lead to high blood pressure, swelling of the lower legs and many cardiovascular diseases.
Normal diet contains enough salt to meet daily requirements. So we should absolutely not add salt. But many foods contain too much salt. Ready-made (frozen) dishes, prepared meats, chips and salty snacks in particular contain far too much salt. Some sauces, cheeses and breakfast cereals also contain too much salt. If in doubt, check the packaging which will indicate the exact amount of salt.
Bread without salt is only necessary in extreme cases. Bread does not contain regular table salt but iodine salt. This will prevent thyroid problems. Therefore, also use iodine salt if you bake your own bread.
