Asbestos
The use of asbestos has been banned for more than 15 years. But asbestos is still present in many homes. How dangerous is asbestos now?
Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious illness. The fibers are released when processing building materials that contain asbestos, such as insulation material and eternite plates. Asbestos is mainly released when sanding, drilling, sawing and damaging these building materials.
Inhaling asbestos can cause lung, throat or lining cancer. The cancers often develop decades after exposure but are often fatal within a year of the appearance of the first signs. Asbestosis can also arise. This results in stiffening of the lungs and shortness of breath. Victims can appeal to the Asbestos Fund. They receive a monthly intervention of 1,500 euros.
When working with asbestos-containing building materials, we must avoid inhaling the fibers. Undamaged building materials can be returned to the recycling park. It is best to call on professionals for the demolition itself.
