Burnout

People who suddenly experience extreme fatigue and disinterest in their work are sometimes told that they have a burnout. But what is burnout really and what can you do about it?

The term burnout was first used in the 1970s. It was then noticed that people who usually put in 200% effort suddenly experienced extreme fatigue, both physically and mentally. They found it extremely difficult to make the slightest effort and concentrate.

Burnout mainly occurs in people who are under stress for a long time, partly because they have a high sense of responsibility, are demanding (also for themselves) or are perfectionists.

When treating burnout, the factors that influenced the occurrence of the burnout are identified (e.g. thinking that one does not work hard enough) and risk factors are listed (e.g. working too hard, working too much overtime). Sometimes it is necessary to interrupt work for a longer period of time.
