COPD
COPD is the abbreviation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Many people have this disease without being aware of it. Our GP will tell you why this happens.
People with COPD have irreversible narrowing of the airways and damage to the alveoli. 9 out of 10 people with COPD are smokers.
In advanced stages, they have coughing fits that prevent them from sleeping and exercising. In the early stages, COPD causes few symptoms, although the lungs are already affected. Because the complaints develop very gradually, victims often do not notice that they have problems. They attribute the complaints to smoking (which is also correct) and they learn to live with it.
However, early treatment and smoking cessation can prevent these people from facing a dramatic end to life with shortness of breath. Smokers should discuss this with their doctor. This can help them to stop smoking and, if necessary, refer them for a lung examination.
