Dry eye disease

Dry eyes are mainly known as a problem in the elderly. But nowadays, young people also increasingly suffer from dry eyes. Why does this happen and what can you do about it?

Dry eyes cause a burning, stinging sensation as if there is sand in your eyes. Older people suffer more from it. The main cause is insufficient tear fluid production or poor quality tear fluid. There are also diseases such as Sjögren's in which an immunological defense against the lacrimal gland occurs. Smoking, air conditioning, air pollution and cycling in the wind can also cause dry eyes.

But the disease is now also more common in young people. By reading, watching TV or using the computer for a long time, they blink less, which means that tear fluid will evaporate more quickly and dry eyes will occur.

In most cases it is sufficient to avoid the cause. Sometimes the use of artificial tears may also be necessary. If this has insufficient effect, a doctor should be consulted.
