Hiccups

Everyone has hiccups sometimes. That's usually just annoying, but can it also be dangerous?

Hiccups are caused by the diaphragm contracting and the larynx closing at the same time. In this way we try to push air out against a closed larynx, causing the "hiccup" sound.

The cause of hiccups is often due to a full stomach. For example, if we drink too much soda or eat too much or too quickly, hiccups can occur. Hiccups can also occur after excessive alcohol consumption (especially beer). It usually takes a few minutes to hours.

If hiccups last for several days, a serious underlying condition of the lungs or gastrointestinal tract may be the cause. Then a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Hiccups usually go away on their own. Relaxing enough and above all not doing anything to prevent the hiccups is the best solution. All remedies such as letting it slide, drinking water with a finger in your ear or standing on your head do not help.
