How to take medication correctly?
Medications can sometimes not work properly if they are taken incorrectly. Some have to eat with meals, others outside meals. But what can you drink while taking your pills?
You should definitely avoid fruit juice and lemon juice if you are taking medication for heartburn. Maalox and Gaviscon, for example, contain aluminum salt and fruit juice will cause you to absorb too much of that salt, causing cramps.
You should definitely avoid grapefruit juice because it will interact with your liver enzymes that break down the medications. This can enhance the effect of blood pressure lowering agents, cholesterol agents, heart and asthma medications.
It is better not to use coffee to take antibiotics. The combination of coffee with puffers against asthma and COPD can cause palpitations. Milk is also not recommended because the calcium from the milk prevents the absorption of the medication in the intestine.
Taking medication with alcohol is certainly out of the question. It is best to simply take your medications with water.
