Rabies
Everyone has heard of rabies, but few people know what it is exactly.
Rabies can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from animals infected with the rabies virus. Dogs in particular, but also foxes, cats, bats and monkeys can transmit the disease.
The virus causes inflammation of the brain that can be fatal. The first complaints are irritability, anxiety and headache. At a further stage, muscle cramps and swallowing problems may occur. If you suspect contamination, rinse the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes. Then you need to disinfect with iodine or alcohol. In the meantime, contact a doctor for an urgent appointment.
Vaccination is only recommended for those who often come into contact with animals such as veterinarians, livestock traders, hunters, forest rangers, but also for joggers and anyone who goes on a multi-day bike ride or is going to live in a country that is still developing.
