What can you do if you have low blood pressure?

Many young women and slim people have low blood pressure. That is not unhealthy or dangerous unless there is a major illness to blame.

We speak of low blood pressure when values are below 110/70 in men and below 100/60 in women. Low blood pressure usually does not cause any complaints, but sometimes dizziness, fatigue or lethargy may occur.

Often there is no clear cause of low blood pressure, but sometimes there is associated blood loss, fluid loss or heart failure. In these latter cases, blood pressure is dangerous and a visit to the doctor is necessary. A special form of low blood pressure is orthostatic hypotension, in which low blood pressure is caused by standing up quickly.

People with low blood pressure can prevent this by drinking enough water and limiting or avoiding alcohol. It also helps to add enough salt to meals and to do more exercise, such as walking for an hour every day. Finally, people with low blood pressure should also avoid standing for long periods of time.
