Inguinal hernia
Many overweight men have to undergo surgery because of an inguinal hernia. But what exactly is an inguinal hernia?
An inguinal hernia is a weak spot or opening in the peritoneum through which part of the intestine drops into the groin.
Most people with an inguinal hernia have no complaints. But for example when coughing or bending over, a bulge in the groin can become palpable and visible. In men, the pain can radiate into the scrotum. In severe cases, the intestinal loop can become pinched and die due to the restriction of the blood supply.
Inguinal hernias are more common in men, but also in people who are overweight, who smoke, who are constipated or who have to lift heavy weights. An inguinal hernia is also more common in certain families.
In most cases, treatment consists of surgery. In recent years, this has usually been done via keyhole surgery. In the case of an inguinal hernia, losing weight can provide the solution, but losing weight too quickly can worsen the inguinal hernia.
