Measles vaccination
Everyone used to think that measles was a typical childhood disease. But young adults are also at increased risk.
People between the ages of 20 and 45 have often never had measles and have not been sufficiently vaccinated. They can get measles. The disease is characterized by red, raised, itchy spots that mainly occur on the trunk and face. Inflamed eyes, fever and coughing can also occur. Most victims are cured after a week or two, but 1 in 1,000 may suffer from acute brain inflammation that can cause permanent damage or even be fatal.
Young adults should therefore check their vaccinations. Chances are they only received one dose of the vaccine. Some were never even vaccinated. Two vaccinations are needed to enjoy lifelong protection. Until the end of 2016, the vaccines can be obtained free of charge from your GP or occupational medicine department.
