Menopause
Just about every woman will enter menopause around the age of 50. But what exactly is menopause and can you do anything about it?
Menopause is the time when a woman's menstrual periods stop. The period around menopause is menopause. Menopause starts a few years before menopause and continues for a few years after menopause. This is the period when a woman's eggs run out and hormone levels start to fluctuate. The interval between two periods becomes longer and the bleeding is reduced, but it is mainly the hot flashes and palpitations that are annoying. Sometimes depression, a thinning of the mucous membrane of the vagina or urine loss also occur.
Menopause is a natural phase in life and does not require treatment. Hormones can only be prescribed if the mood disorders or hot flashes are too severe. The hormones do not protect against cardiovascular disease as was long assumed.
Your GP can use a blood test to determine to what extent the menopause has already started.
