Metabolic Syndrome
The metabolic syndrome is a combination of a number of diseases that results in an increase in cardiovascular risk. What diseases are we talking about and what exactly is the danger?
People with metabolic syndrome have at least three of the five following conditions: waist circumference greater than 80 cm in women or 94 cm in men, elevated triglycerides (150 mg/dl or more), low good HDL cholesterol (less than 40 mg/dl in man and 50 mg/dl in woman), high blood pressure (130 over 85 mmHg or more), high sugar levels (100 mg/dl or more).
Metabolic syndrome also appears to be more common in people with psoriasis. The disease mainly occurs in people who eat too much and exercise too little. This causes obesity and insulin resistance. Such people have a three times higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
The treatment consists of tackling obesity through diet and more exercise. Otherwise, each disease must be treated separately with medication.
