What is post-traumatic stress?

After the attacks in Zaventem and Maalbeek, you hear that a number of people suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But what exactly is PTSD and what can you do about it?

PTSD is an anxiety disorder resulting from severe stress situations that are life-threatening or can cause serious physical or psychological harm. First of all we think of war and armed conflicts, but violent and/or terrorist attacks, serious accidents, rape and child abuse can also cause PTSD. The witnesses to these facts can also develop PTSD.

People with PTSD suffer from re-experiencing the facts in the form of nightmares or flashbacks and may exhibit avoidance behavior. This can also lead to depression and sleep disorders. Treatment usually consists of cognitive behavioral therapy. An attempt is made to reduce anxiety symptoms through imaginary exposure to the traumatic event.
