Does testosterone help against aging?
Some doctors prescribe testosterone to treat aging symptoms. But does testosterone really help against aging?
Testosterone is a male hormone that, among other things, ensures more muscle mass, competitiveness and libido. Testosterone production decreases from the age of 40. During the same period, muscle mass and sex drive also decrease. This male aging process is also called andropause or penopause. But unlike menopause, which is due to a sudden drop in estrogen, andropause is not just the result of a drop in testosterone.
A decrease in testosterone in the blood is therefore a normal aging process and it cannot be counteracted by testosterone intake. In addition, the administration of testosterone causes more heart disease and can stimulate dormant prostate cancer. The beneficial effect of the administration of sex hormones has also not been proven in women.
