Winter depression
Some people feel a bit depressed during winter. One then speaks of a winter depression. But what exactly is that and what can you do about it?
Winter depression mainly occurs when the days become very short. It is also more common in northern countries such as Sweden, Norway and Canada. The further from the equator, the more common it is. People with winter depression feel tired, they need a lot of sleep, they feel gloomy and are irritable.
The cause of winter depression can be found in a prolonged release of the sleep hormone melatonin, which makes us feel more tired. The lack of light would also affect other stimulating hormones such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.
The solution for winter depression is mainly to ensure sufficient light. You should mainly get a lot of light in the morning, although more light in the evening can also help. This way, your biological clock continues to think that the days are still longer.
