Pfeiffer disease
There is a very good chance that you once had glandular fever. But what exactly is the disease and what can you do about it?
The disease is caused by a virus. The infection is probably via saliva. Most people become infected during the teenage years. For these reasons, the disease is also called Kuskes disease, but it is also known as mononucleosis and glandular fever.
The first complaints occur one to seven weeks after infection. In addition to fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands and fever may occur. The throat is usually bright red and there may be white dots on the tonsils. If there is any doubt about the diagnosis, the GP can take a blood test. Some children are not bothered by the infection.
The complaints usually last longer than a week and can sometimes last for months. Paracetamol can be taken for pain and fever. In the past, it was recommended to take it easy during the illness, but today this is no longer recommended.
