Osteopathy

In Greek, 'osteo' means bone and 'pathos' means disease. In osteopathy, the spine and pelvis have a central place in the treatment. Organs, skull, muscles, blood vessels and the nervous system are also involved in the treatment. The body is viewed as a whole, for example, years of back problems can, according to osteopathy, have their actual cause in an intestinal disorder. Or an abnormality in the back can explain an intestinal problem such as constipation.

Osteopaths therefore not only work on the musculoskeletal system but also on the craniosacral system and the visceral system. In osteopathy, the problem is tackled with corrective measures.

There is limited evidence for the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. There is no credible scientific basis for the treatment of the craniosacral system and the visceral system. Since not all osteopaths are trained as physiotherapists, there is great concern about the safety of the treatment, which can, for example, cause strokes and ruptures in blood vessels.
