Why is the Parvo virus dangerous for pregnant women?

Parvovirus B19, the virus that causes the so-called fifth disease or erythema infectiosum, can be dangerous for pregnant women because of the possible risks to the unborn baby. But what are the main reasons why parvovirus poses a risk during pregnancy?

If a pregnant woman becomes infected with parvovirus B19, the virus can reach the fetus through the placenta. This happens in about 30% of cases of maternal infection.

This can cause hydrops fetalis. This is a condition in which abnormal accumulation of fluid occurs in the fetus. This can lead to anemia, heart failure and ultimately death in the fetus. The risks are greatest if the infection occurs during the second trimester of pregnancy, especially between the 9th and 20th week.

If a pregnant woman becomes infected, close fetal monitoring is often recommended, including ultrasound to look for signs of fluid overload and anemia. In severe cases of fetal anemia, blood transfusion may be considered to help the fetus recover from the anemia.
