What is frontotemporal dementia?

In February 2023, it was announced that Bruce Willis has frontotemporal dementia (FTD). What makes this form of dementia so special?

FTD is a form of dementia that mainly affects the front and sides of the brain, leading to changes in personality, behavior and language skills. People with FTD may exhibit changes in their personality and social behavior, such as disinhibition, apathy, or lack of empathy.

FTD can also affect language skills, resulting in problems speaking, writing, understanding and naming things. In some cases, FTD can also lead to motor problems, such as tremors, stiffness, or weakness.

The exact cause of this degeneration is not always known, but genetic factors may play a role. There is currently no cure for FTD. Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and improving quality of life. This may include medication and behavioral interventions.
