Does magnesium help against fatigue?

Magnesium is indeed often recommended in advertisements against fatigue. But does magnesium do anything against fatigue?

This mineral plays a crucial role in various bodily functions related to energy levels and fatigue. Magnesium is essential for the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy carrier in cells. Without enough magnesium, the body cannot produce energy efficiently, which can lead to fatigue.

Magnesium can help improve sleep quality by regulating neurotransmitters that promote sleep, such as melatonin. Better sleep quality can help reduce daytime fatigue. Magnesium plays a role in muscle function and can reduce muscle cramps and pain. This can be especially helpful for people who are physically active and experience fatigue due to muscle problems.

However, magnesium supplements only appear to be useful if there is also a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium supplements are best taken under the guidance of a doctor, especially because excessive magnesium intake can have side effects such as diarrhea and stomach cramps. Additionally, it's important to get magnesium from a balanced diet, including foods such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, green leafy vegetables and fish.

In case of complaints such as persistent fatigue, it is advisable to contact a doctor for a comprehensive evaluation and advice. Fatigue is not only caused by magnesium deficiency but also by serious conditions such as anemia, depression, cancer and other serious conditions.
