What can I do about mosquito bites?

Mosquito bites can be quite annoying, but there are several ways to relieve the symptoms and reduce itching.

It is best to clean the area with soap and water immediately after the mosquito bite to remove any bacteria and prevent infection. Then apply a cold compress or ice cube (wrapped in a cloth) to the bite to reduce swelling and itching.

Use a cream or gel containing antihistamine or hydrocortisone to relieve the itching. Calamine lotion and aloe vera are also used, but mainly have a cooling and soothing effect.

Other remedies such as bicarbonate salt paste, vinegar, honey and tea tree oil are less effective and at best have a soothing effect.

Try not to scratch, no matter how tempting it is. Scratching can damage the skin and lead to infections. If you have a severe reaction to a mosquito bite, such as fever, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.

You can prevent mosquito bites by applying insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil to the skin and clothing. Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially during the evening and night when mosquitoes are most active. Use a mosquito net around your bed, especially if you sleep in an area with a lot of mosquitoes.
