Does decaf coffee cause diarrhea?
Decaf Coffee can cause diarrhea in some people, but this is usually not due to the lack of caffeine. The cause may be other components in coffee.
Coffee, including decaffeinated coffee, contains acids that can irritate the stomach and sometimes have a laxative effect. Adding artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol to your coffee can cause diarrhea. In addition to caffeine, coffee contains several compounds that can stimulate stomach and intestinal activity, such as cafestol and kahweol.
If you find that you get diarrhea after drinking decaffeinated coffee, it may be helpful to experiment with different types of coffee or reduce the amount you drink. If you have excessive diarrhea, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially if the diarrhea is accompanied by weight loss.
