What is the HMP virus?

The HMP virus usually refers to human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus that causes respiratory infections. This virus belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae, which also includes other well-known viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and measles virus. HMPV was first identified in 2001.

The virus mainly affects young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. In healthy adults, it often causes milder symptoms. The virus spreads via droplet infection (coughing, sneezing) and through contact with contaminated surfaces. Infections usually occur in late winter and early spring, similar to RSV and influenza viruses.

The severity of symptoms varies depending on the age and general health of the person. Common symptoms include runny nose, stuffy nose, fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue and breathing problems such as wheezing or shortness of breath (especially in young children and the elderly).

In vulnerable groups, HMPV can lead to serious infections such as bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways), pneumonia and worsening of asthma or COPD.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Treatment is supportive and aimed at relieving symptoms. In severe cases, such as respiratory problems, hospitalization may be necessary, with oxygen therapy or ventilation.

Although there is no vaccine available against HMPV, you can reduce the risk of infection by taking normal hygiene measures.
