PFAS are a large group of man-made chemicals found in non-stick coatings, water-repellent clothing, fire-fighting foam, and food packaging, among other things. They hardly break down (forever chemicals) and accumulate in the environment and in the human body.

High PFAS exposure has been linked to immune system disruption, reduced fertility, elevated cholesterol, liver damage, and an increased risk of certain cancers (such as kidney and testicular cancer). However, these effects have mainly been demonstrated at higher exposure levels than most people experience.

PFAS blood testing measures the amount of PFAS in your blood (often PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS). It can be useful in scientific research or for groups with high exposure (e.g., workers in Teflon factories or people living in highly polluted areas).

It does not provide direct information about your health status. There are no medical reference values (such as safe or unhealthy levels). Doctors cannot provide specific treatment based on a high value. The test is often expensive and not covered by health insurance.

It is only useful if you live in a highly polluted area (such as around a PFAS-producing factory, e.g., 3M in Zwijndrecht or Dordrecht).
