What is bigorexia?

Bigorexia, also known as muscle dysmorphia or reverse anorexia, is a mental disorder characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with perceived insufficient muscle mass and physical strength.

Individuals with bigorexia see themselves as too small or insufficiently muscular, despite often already having significant muscle mass. This condition mainly affects men, but can also affect women.

Symptoms of bigorexia can include excessive exercise, strict dieting, constant measuring and weighing, use of supplements and steroids, social isolation, low self-esteem and sexual dysfunction and other health problems.

Bigorexia can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health. It can lead to chronic injuries, hormonal imbalances and negatively impact relationships and social interactions.

The treatment of bigorexia consists of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aimed at changing the negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to the disorder. In some cases, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed to address underlying psychological problems.
