What is non-invasive neuromodulation?

Non-invasive neuromodulation is a medical technique that affects the activity of the nervous system without the need for surgical intervention. This means that no surgery or implants are needed to change nerve activity.

Non-invasive neuromodulation is used to treat various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Here are some of the most important techniques.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific parts of the brain. It is often used to treat depression, especially in patients who do not respond well to medication.

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES) is being investigated for several conditions, including depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) are actually invasive techniques. The non-invasive approach is under development but has not yet been able to demonstrate comparable effects.

Noninvasive neuromodulation is attractive because of its lower risks and side effects compared to invasive procedures. However, the techniques are increasingly being used in an alternative circuit for indications where efficacy has not yet been demonstrated and their usefulness is therefore questionable.
