What are the benefits and dangers of testosterone gel?

Testosterone can be helpful for men with clinically diagnosed testosterone deficiency. But some men also use it to treat a number of age-related ailments.

Testosterone is often prescribed to men with hypogonadism, a condition in which the testicles do not produce enough testosterone. This can lead to symptoms such as decreased libido, fatigue, depression, and loss of muscle mass.

Testosterone gel is often prescribed to improve energy, mood, libido, and muscle strength in older men. Blood tests then show low testosterone levels compared to younger men. The decline in testosterone with age is a natural process and treatment is not indicated.

Possible side effects of testosterone gel can include skin irritation at the application site, increased redness, swelling of the mammary gland, and acne. More serious side effects can include increased blood pressure, sleep apnea, and an increased risk of heart disease and prostate problems.

Testosterone gel can be helpful for men with testosterone deficiency by improving symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido, and muscle loss. Testosterone gel is not indicated for age-related testosterone decline.
