What is cellulite and what can you do about it?

Cellulite is a cosmetic condition that causes the skin to develop a bumpy, pit-like texture that resembles the peel of an orange.

This is due to fatty deposits pushing through the connective tissue layers under the skin, resulting in an irregular skin surface. Cellulite usually appears on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen, and is a common phenomenon, especially in women.

Hereditary factors play a major role in the development of cellulite. Hormonal fluctuations, especially during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, can also contribute to the development of cellulite. An unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can increase the chance of developing cellulite. Individuals with a higher percentage of body fat and less muscle mass may be more likely to develop cellulite, although slim people can also develop it.

Regular exercise and strength training can help burn fat and build muscle, which can contribute to a smoother skin surface. Drinking enough water can help keep the skin hydrated and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Treatments such as lymphatic drainage, laser therapy, radiofrequency and mesotherapy are often expensive, but there is no scientific evidence that they have an effect on cellulite. Also for skin care products caffeine, retinol or other ingredients will not improve skin texture.
