What if I get infected between my two vaccinations?
Vibration syndrome, also known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to vibration, usually from hand tools such as drills, chainsaws and hammers. These vibrations can damage the blood vessels, nerves, muscles and joints of the hands and arms.
The vibration syndrome will lead to reduced blood flow in the blood vessels, resulting in whitening of the fingers (Raynaud's phenomenon), often in response to cold or stress, followed by redness and pain when warming up. It can also lead to numbness, tingling and reduced dexterity due to nerve damage. Pain in the hands and arms, reduced grip strength and joint stiffness may also occur.
The cause lies in the long-term exposure to vibrations from hand tools is the main cause. Factors such as the duration and intensity of exposure, as well as working position, can influence the severity of the condition.
You can prevent the condition by limiting exposure to vibration through the use of vibration-dampening hand tools and gloves and taking regular breaks when working with vibrating tools.
Treatment consists of avoiding further exposure to vibration to prevent further damage. Medications may be prescribed to relieve symptoms, such as calcium channel blockers for vascular symptoms. Physical therapy and exercises can help improve hand function.
