Can quitting smoking reduce the risk of bone fractures?

Smoking increases the risk of bone fractures, but quitting smoking can also reduce the risk of bone fractures. This applies to all bone fractures except hip fractures.

The link between smoking and lower density is not new and the relationship between smoking and the increased risk of bone fractures is well known.

But a new study of four million South Koreans shows that quitting smoking for more than a decade reduces the risk of bone fractures. This is the first study that can demonstrate this in black and white and of course this still needs to be confirmed. But it is an additional reason to recommend quitting smoking.
