What can I do if I get a jellyfish bite?
If you have a jellyfish bite, you can take the following steps to relieve the pain and prevent further complications.
Rinse the affected area with salt water. Do not use fresh water as it can activate the stinging cells and worsen the pain. Carefully remove any tentacles left on the skin. Use tweezers or wear gloves to prevent yourself from being stung.
Rinse the bite with vinegar or a baking soda solution to neutralize the toxins. This can help reduce pain and swelling. Vinegar is especially effective against stings from certain types of jellyfish such as the box jellyfish. For Portuguese warships (Man-o-War) it is better to avoid vinegar and use salt water or baking soda.
Soak the affected area in warm water (not hot) for 20 to 45 minutes to relieve pain. The temperature of the water should be comfortably warm and not scorching. If necessary, take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the pain.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe pain, nausea, vomiting, swelling of the throat or face, or if the bite is in a sensitive area such as the face or genitals.
