Can evaporation of saline solution help against COVID-19?
Some (German) media indeed report that the nebulization of a saline solution is effective against COVID-19. Both the 0.9% isotonic saline solution and the hypertonic saline solution are mentioned. It is true that nebulization of saline solution is standard practice for people in hospitals and intensive care units. In Belgium, people are reluctant to do this because it could promote the spread of COVID-19.
Little is known about the use of these saline solutions outside the hospital to prevent COVID-19 or to treat people with moderate complaints. But on the other hand, it seems to contribute little to the intended goal. The nebulization of saline solution will not prevent the spread of the virus. The amount of salt atomized into the air is too small for this. On the contrary, the nebulized liquid could promote further spread of the virus.
