How can I get infected with chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral infection that is mainly transmitted by mosquitoes. Here are the main ways you can get infected with the chikungunya virus.
The main carriers of chikungunya virus are the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are also responsible for transmitting other viruses, such as dengue and zika. These mosquitoes are found in tropical and subtropical areas, but Aedes albopictus has also spread to temperate climates, including parts of Europe and North America.
Aedes mosquitoes are mainly active during the day, with peak biting periods in the early morning and late afternoon. However, they can also bite at dusk and even indoors.
Although rare, chikungunya can be transmitted through contaminated blood during transfusions in areas where the disease is endemic. However, most countries at risk of chikungunya have strict blood screening procedures in place to prevent this. There have been reports of pregnant women transmitting the virus to their babies during birth. However, this is rare and occurs mainly when the mother becomes infected just before giving birth.
Avoiding mosquito bites is the most effective way to prevent chikungunya virus infection. Use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, and manage your environment to minimize your risk. If you experience symptoms of chikungunya, such as fever, joint pain, rash, and fatigue, seek immediate medical attention.
