Are mouthwashes effective against COVID-19?
Mouthwashes have been shown to kill the COVID-19 virus. This was demonstrated by bringing the coronavirus into contact with high concentrations of mouthwashes in laboratories, after which it turned out that the virus did not survive the contact. Most of the products in these mouthwashes such as chlorhexidine, ethanol and cetylpyridinium chloride have been shown to destroy the lipid layer surrounding the SARS virus and can be assumed to do the same for COVID-19.
This seems hopeful if it were not for the fact that the mouthwash is only applied to the mouth and is effective. The viruses in the nose or other respiratory tract will not be eliminated by the mouthwash. Taking this into account, the usefulness of mouthwash is very limited and not recommended in the prevention of COVID-19.
