Can we become infected with COVID-19 through food?
The risk of contamination with COVID-19 through food is very low. Here are some key points.
The WHO has stated that there is currently no evidence that people can contract COVID-19 from consuming food, including food that is packaged. The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has found no evidence that food is a likely source or route of transmission of the virus. They emphasize that food safety measures remain essential, but specifically target traditional pathogens such as bacteria and not COVID-19.
Before preparing or eating food, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Follow standard food safety guidelines, such as washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly and cooking foods thoroughly to kill traditional pathogens. Regularly clean surfaces and objects that are frequently touched, especially in the kitchen.
