Can you have a miscarriage due to an infection with COVID-19?

COVID-19 can cause complications during pregnancy, but there is no conclusive evidence that it directly leads to miscarriage. The relationship between COVID-19 and pregnancy is complex, and researchers continue to investigate the potential effects of the virus on pregnant women and their unborn children.

Pregnant women with COVID-19 may be at increased risk of severe illness compared to non-pregnant women. This can lead to complications such as preterm birth, which can have indirect effects on the pregnancy. Severe illness in pregnant women can also lead to respiratory problems, which can affect oxygen delivery to the fetus.

Some studies have suggested that pregnant women with severe COVID-19 may be at increased risk of pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and in rare cases intrauterine death. However, research has not found strong evidence that COVID-19 directly leads to an increased risk of miscarriage, especially in the first trimester.

It is important for pregnant women to protect themselves from COVID-19 through vaccination, wearing face masks, adhering to hygiene measures, and avoiding exposure to large groups of people. Vaccination against COVID-19 has been shown to be safe and effective for pregnant women and can help prevent serious complications.
