Can a heat pen help against mosquito bites?

Heat pens, also known as heat treatment devices or "thermal pens", work by applying local heat to the site of the mosquito bite. These devices are said to reduce the itching, swelling and pain associated with insect bites.

The tip of the heat pens is heated to a certain temperature, usually between 45 and 50 degrees Celsius. The heat would denature the proteins from the mosquito's saliva. These proteins are often the cause of itching and inflammation. The heat can temporarily overload the pain receptors in the skin, which can help reduce the itching sensation.

Many users report that the itching decreases significantly after using a heat pen. This effect occurs immediately after treatment but unfortunately does not last long. But heat pens can also cause side effects such as irritation and increased itching. Sometimes even burns occur with repeated or prolonged use. The heat can also cause a small wound that can become infected later.

Besides heat pens, there are other ways to treat mosquito bites such as hydrocortisone creams or cold compresses.

In short, heat pens are not a recommended way to effectively and safely relieve the symptoms of mosquito bites.
